For the first time, women from the villages of Nuku, Cakova, Keteira, and Maloku gathered at Naroi, Moala, to participate in a Women’s mini-craft show aimed at highlighting their handmade products and empowering their community.
This event, organized by the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, served as an invaluable platform for these women to share ideas, acquire new skills, and promote their entrepreneurial spirit. Participants showcased a variety of items, including traditional garments like sulu and Jamba, fine mats, handmade crafts, and fresh produce.
The event not only celebrated the rich traditional artistry of Fijian culture but also revealed the diverse skills and resourcefulness of women from the maritime islands. Draunidalo, Principal of Yasayasa Moala College, who officiated the event, expressed his gratitude to the attendees, emphasizing the essential role women play in society. He remarked, “Women are the backbone of our communities, and their contributions reach far beyond their homes. Events like these inspire economic and social empowerment, fostering self-reliance and innovation.”
Kalo Leba, President of the Maloku Women’s Group, conveyed her appreciation for the initiative, noting the collective effort the women had put in to prepare for the event. “Today, we woke up early, prepared our families, and then made our way to Naroi to showcase our handicrafts. For the women of Maloku, we are selling sulu, Jamba, and honey products from our women’s group project,” she stated.
Unise Vosataki from Vadra highlighted the significance of such events for women in remote areas, noting that many cannot afford to attend larger expos like the Women’s National Expo in Suva. “Today we are thankful to the government for giving us this chance to sell our handicrafts,” she shared, pointing out that the event provides an opportunity for women to enhance their entrepreneurial skills and expand their networks.
This inaugural mini-craft show in Naroi underscores the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to empowering women in rural and maritime communities. By facilitating opportunities for women to showcase their talents and generate income, the government is contributing to gender equality and fostering sustainable development within communities.
This uplifting initiative reflects a positive step towards encouraging female entrepreneurship and strengthening community ties. As more women come together to celebrate their skills and creativity, it paves the way for greater opportunities and advancements in the future.
