Over 30 women from the Soqosoqo Vakamarama ni Yasana o Kadavu are set to benefit from a newly launched capacity-building initiative aimed at enhancing women’s empowerment, leadership, and communication skills. The program was inaugurated at the GCC lounge in Suva.
President of Soqosoqo Vakamarama ni Yasana o Kadavu, Salote Nawalowalo, emphasized that this two-day event aims to boost the confidence and capabilities of women leaders across the nine districts of Kadavu. She pointed out that many women encounter challenges in their leadership roles due to diminished confidence, often resulting in their ideas and contributions being overlooked.
Nawalowalo identified ineffective communication between leaders and their group members as a significant issue that hampers productivity. She noted that important decisions made in meetings often fail to reach the wider community because of inadequate communication strategies implemented by leaders.
Reflecting on past experiences, she mentioned that the decision to organize this training initiative stemmed from observations made during their last AGM. Notably, there was a need for renewed engagement since the last similar program was held in 2017, and many past participants have since passed away.
In her remarks, Nawalowalo encouraged women to unite, create supportive environments, and advocate for one another, especially in the face of negativity. “Women constitute half of the population. We need to work collaboratively with men and support each other,” she asserted, stressing the importance of stepping outside comfort zones and fostering positivity.
She also called on all Soqosoqo Vakamarama groups across the nation to utilize available funding to invest in similar training programs, further propelling the movement towards gender empowerment.
This initiative represents a hopeful step forward in fostering a stronger, more confident, and united community of women leaders who can effectively contribute to their respective districts and beyond, promoting a culture of support and encouragement.
