Women from the villages of Nasoki, Vadra, Keteira, and Cakova in Moala are embracing newfound opportunities through a transformative financial literacy and entrepreneurship program. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, is supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The program aims to equip women with essential skills in bookkeeping, marketing, branding, inventory management, and savings strategies. Additionally, the financial literacy training includes group discussions, promoting collaboration among participants to share insights and learn from each other.
Akemi Nagahara, a JICA volunteer, highlighted the significance of this program, emphasizing that financial literacy and effective business management are critical for fostering sustainable livelihoods. By empowering women to take charge of their financial futures, the program aims to enhance their quality of life and that of their families.
One participant, Jiajiana Vulaono from Cakova village, expressed her newfound confidence in running a small business. She noted, “Before the training, I struggled with starting a small business. Now, I feel confident in keeping records and planning ahead. This knowledge will change how I support my family.”
The initiative also provides participants with valuable information on essential social welfare services and available assistance programs. Moreover, awareness sessions led by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, Fiji Police, and the Department of Children under the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection are part of the program.
This initiative reflects the government’s continuous commitment to promoting gender equality, empowering women within the community, and reducing poverty.
With such efforts, there is hope for lasting change in the lives of these women, paving the way for greater economic independence and community development. This program not only builds individual capabilities but also contributes to a stronger, more resilient society.
