Empowering Women: A Community Effort Blossoms in Waibau

The Waibau Women’s Club, established in 2019 and registered with the Ministry of Women, is dedicated to empowering women and young girls in the Waibau community. Leading by example, the club promotes agricultural practices to enhance the daily lives of families.

The club currently consists of 11 members who actively manage six plots of land, focusing on producing various crops, including taro, cassava, sweet potatoes, and ginger. The women have also cultivated a portion of land intended for the future harvesting of kava, a traditional beverage in the region. This initiative reflects their commitment to improving their households’ food security and sustainability.

Remarkably, the women utilize their leased lands in Naqaraivi, Waibau, to cultivate nutritious crops and vegetables efficiently. This effort has not only contributed to the well-being of their families but has also fostered collaborative support among members, as they often assist each other in maintaining their plots.

The women have received recognition from the Ministry of Forestry for their agricultural efforts, reflecting the government’s support and commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of women in rural areas. They work diligently throughout the week to ensure their crops thrive, demonstrating resilience even in the face of climate challenges, such as unpredictable weather, which can impact crop health.
