The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, emphasized the importance of respect for women during a recent speech at the Kuku Navyuak Sangam Temple in Nausori. He articulated that the respect afforded to women is a reflection of the overall health and culture of society, stating, “It is contradictory to worship goddesses while overlooking the ‘Laxmi’ (goddess) in our homes.”

Singh also underscored the need to preserve cultural values and religious practices, urging reverence for the sacrifices and vision of past generations, particularly their commitment to education during challenging times. He highlighted the significance of maintaining the Hindi language, calling on parents to encourage their children to learn it, as understanding Hindi is crucial for appreciating their religion and culture, especially since it is the language of sacred texts.

His address resonated with similar sentiments expressed by other community leaders, including Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua, who recently highlighted that a nation’s strength is measured not by military might but by respect for its citizens. This focus on dignity and community engagement is vital for fostering a cohesive and harmonious society in Fiji.

Singh’s comments bolster a hopeful narrative for the future, suggesting that by honoring and empowering women, and by nurturing cultural heritage through language and education, Fiji can work toward a more inclusive and respectful society.

This ongoing dialogue about the integral roles women play in families and communities aligns with broader initiatives advocating inclusivity and mutual respect among diverse cultural backgrounds, reinforcing a commitment to building a stronger, more united Fiji.
