The Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Jovesa Vocea, has announced plans to extend the electricity grid from Korotari to the district of Wairiki this year. This project will involve the installation of electricity poles in designated areas, benefiting local communities significantly. Vocea mentioned that Energy Fiji Limited has communicated the decision to proceed with the grid extension.

Despite this progress, Vocea expressed concerns about the current electricity supply, which is limited to Navatu Secondary School. He highlighted the need for further coverage, stating, “I had hoped more areas would be covered, but as of now, the extension is set to reach only part of Wairiki.” He emphasized the importance of local leaders advocating for additional support, as strong community leadership is crucial for advancing infrastructure improvements and services.

Vocea pointed out the growing demand from the community for more assistance, especially in remote villages that struggle with basic services. “We continue to push for more support to reach these villages where there is a genuine need for assistance,” he reassured, underlining the ongoing efforts to engage and find solutions for the challenges they face.

This announcement aligns with previous efforts highlighted by the Fiji Ministry of Public Works, which has invested significantly in rural electrification programs to enhance infrastructure and ensure equitable access to essential services across the country. Their ongoing initiatives aim to connect more households and support the growth of local communities, paving the way for a more prosperous and sustainable future.

As these projects unfold, they illustrate the government’s commitment to uplifting the quality of life for Fijians, particularly those residing in underserved regions. The proactive approach to rural electrification is undoubtedly a step towards a brighter future for communities in Wairiki and beyond, fostering greater connectivity and enhanced living standards.
