Women journalists from various Pacific nations convened yesterday at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva for the inaugural conference organized by Women in Media Fiji (WiM Fiji). Running over two days, the event boasts the theme “Resilience in a Rapidly Evolving Media Landscape,” drawing in prominent media practitioners, civil society members, and regional stakeholders.
Rosi Doviverata, president of the Fijian Media Association (FMA) and co-founder of WiM, stated that the timing of this conference is critical due to the genuine and perceived challenges posed by the evolving media landscape. She emphasized that the conference is designed to provide a platform for women journalists, guest speakers, and participants to share insights and experiences while exploring strategies to amplify women’s voices in the media.
The success of WiM, which was founded in response to a call for a supportive environment for female content creators during a 2022 workshop, aligns with a strategic three-year plan aimed at nurturing women in media across the Pacific. Doviverata explained, “This inaugural conference would allow women journalists to dialogue, share their experiences, and explore pathways forward.”
Highlighting the historical significance of female journalists in Fiji, FMA general secretary Stanley Simpson noted their resilience during tumultuous periods, such as the coups in 2000 and 2006, explaining how women journalists have played pivotal roles in documenting and influencing narratives in the country.
The conference will feature various local speakers, including Tuiketei and leadership consultant Ana Laqeretabua, and discussions on critical topics such as the ethical implications of artificial intelligence in journalism. Notable sponsors supporting this initiative include the Australian Government, the British High Commission, and several major corporations.
With the increasing focus on the challenges women face in the media industry, this conference presents a hopeful opportunity for enhanced solidarity among women, promoting their vital roles in activism, storytelling, and driving gender equality.
These developments signify a positive momentum for women’s representation in media, reflecting the collective effort to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for future generations of journalists.
