The media is pivotal in shaping perceptions and narratives related to women’s rights and achievements, a theme emphasized by Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women and Children, during a breakfast event hosted by The Fiji Times Ltd in honor of International Women’s Day. Kiran underscored the crucial role media plays in amplifying women’s voices and advancing gender equality.

Addressing this year’s theme, “Accelerate action,” Kiran called on Fijians to recognize both the struggles and victories of previous generations, particularly highlighting contributions from Fiji’s indigenous, Melanesian, and Chinese communities. While she acknowledged the progress attained in various sectors, Kiran pointed out that significant work remains to be done.

She articulated that community dialogues are heavily shaped by how women are represented in the media. The Minister stressed the importance of portraying women as influential decision-makers rather than merely celebrating their achievements, reflecting a need for more substantial representation in media narratives. This call echoes her earlier statements made at forums such as the Pacific Media Partnership Conference, where she challenged media outlets to revise their portrayal of women in leadership roles.

Fiji has one of the lowest rates of female representation in government, making the role of media even more crucial in showcasing the contributions of female leaders. Kiran’s push for more equitable representation complements national endeavors focused on implementing gender-responsive budgeting policies. These policies intend to incorporate gender considerations into governmental practices, creating a pathway for sustainable development.

By nurturing an environment conducive to women’s economic participation and leadership, Fiji can foster a broader societal benefit for families and the economy. As community engagement in promoting discussions about women’s empowerment grows, there is hope that these dialogues will spark actual change and progress towards a society that values women’s contributions across all domains. Continued efforts to enhance visibility, representation, and safety for women in leadership roles bring promise for a more inclusive and equitable future in Fiji.
