At the inaugural Women in Media Fiji conference held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, co-founder Rosi Doviverata emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant against any regulatory encroachments that may undermine the progress made in recent years. Doviverata, delivering her opening address, highlighted the conference’s theme, “Resilience in a Rapidly Evolving Media Landscape,” as a pivotal moment for not just Fiji, but the entire Pacific region.

The event drew participants from various sectors, including mainstream media, government, and private organizations, united by a common goal of fostering female representation in media. Doviverata reminded attendees of the significance of the repeal of stringent media laws implemented three years ago, cautioning against complacency in preserving newfound freedoms.

“This conference is more than a gathering; it is a movement—a space where women journalists, editors, producers, media advocates, and allies can come together to share stories, challenge norms, and build lasting alliances,” Doviverata articulated, recognizing the influence Fiji’s media landscape has on neighboring Pacific countries.

She expressed gratitude to regional delegates from countries such as Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Samoa for their participation, stating, “While our islands may be separated by oceans, we are united by purpose, passion, and a shared vision for a more equitable media landscape.” This collective spirit embodies the hope that through strengthened collaboration, the media industry can address ongoing challenges, such as gender-based violence and underrepresentation of women in leadership roles.

The conference included discussions on critical topics, such as the ethical implications of artificial intelligence in journalism and the urgent need for a safe environment for female reporters, who often face harassment and challenges that deter their involvement in the industry.

As the conference concluded, it left an impression of optimism for the future of women’s representation in media, driven by solidarity, mentorship, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for all journalists. The ongoing dialogue surrounding the empowerment of women in media continues to inspire hope and pave the way for lasting change across Fiji and the Pacific.
