Sashi Kiran, the newly appointed Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, has outlined her primary objectives focusing on women’s empowerment, child protection, support for vulnerable communities, and the fight against gender-based violence (GBV). In her inaugural statements, Ms. Kiran expressed gratitude towards her predecessor, Lynda Tabuya, acknowledging the solid groundwork laid during Ms. Tabuya’s tenure.

As Kiran embarks on her role, she emphasizes a commitment to confront ongoing societal challenges. She stated, “This ministry exists, not just to administer policies, but to advocate, to inspire change, and to ensure that no one in Fiji is left behind.” This vision reflects a determination to make a meaningful impact in the community.

Highlighting the importance of women in Fijian society, Ms. Kiran reaffirmed that the struggle for equal rights and opportunities remains a critical agenda, particularly in the wake of recent challenges faced by her predecessor. She declared that women serve as the backbone of families and communities, yet many still experience significant barriers to safety and equality. Her plan includes promoting economic empowerment, ensuring gender equality, and creating leadership opportunities for women across various sectors.

Regarding child protection, Ms. Kiran stressed the importance of prioritizing the well-being, education, and security of children. She vowed to combat child abuse and to support vulnerable families, establishing a nurturing environment where every child can flourish without fear. Additionally, her ministry will reach out to often marginalized groups, including the elderly and individuals with disabilities, promising a review of social protection programs to ensure they are inclusive and effectively meet the needs of the community.

This commitment from the new minister brings a sense of hope and renewal as she aims to build on the efforts of her predecessors while making profound strides toward a more equitable and supportive society for all Fijians. By focusing on these crucial issues, Ms. Kiran is setting a positive tone for the future, emphasizing the importance of community well-being and empowerment.
