Empowering the Next Generation: Grants for Young Entrepreneurs in Fiji

Women have been urged to mentor and support youth aspiring to launch their own businesses. Losana Marama, representing West Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, spoke to attendees at a women’s conference held at Gurukul Primary School in Saweni, Lautoka, regarding the Young Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES) program.

Marama explained that the purpose of this scheme is to offer grants to young entrepreneurs with innovative and feasible business ideas. The Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport provides financial aid of up to $30,000 to eligible individuals aged between 18 and 40, helping them to develop or expand their creative business ventures.

“If your child has inventive and original ideas, they can apply for this funding,” Marama stated. She emphasized that many young people might be inspired by successful business models seen on platforms like TikTok, but that similar concepts could be applied in Fiji with the proper support.

She clarified, “The maximum grant is $30,000, which is not a loan but a fully funded grant. If you recognize a talent in your child, it is essential to encourage and empower them.”

Marama highlighted the significant role young entrepreneurs play in fostering economic growth. “As parents and guardians, we need to inspire our children to become ‘job creators’ instead of just ‘job seekers,’” she added.

The West Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) office is located at Rogorogoivuda House in Lautoka.
