Independent Member of Parliament Jone Usamate has called for increased participation of young people in politics as Fiji approaches the 2026 General Election. Speaking in Labasa, Usamate emphasized the need for politicians who can effectively represent the interests of the youth, who are increasingly becoming a significant voting demographic. He noted that past elections, such as the 2022 elections, saw limited representation from younger candidates, with individuals like Ketan Lal and Rinesh Sharma marking a shift towards youth involvement.

Usamate highlighted the importance of balancing perspectives in parliament, stating that older politicians often approach issues from their own experiences, which may not reflect the realities faced by younger generations. His belief is that a diverse political landscape, which includes a stronger representation of both youth and women in politics, is crucial for a well-functioning democracy.

Despite challenges within the opposition, including some members showing support for the government, Usamate remains dedicated to ensuring that the government’s actions are checked effectively. He is committed to running as a candidate in the next general election and believes it is imperative to understand how to engage the youth in political processes to reflect their voices in parliament.

In light of the growing number of proposed political parties for the upcoming elections, which now stands at 14, Usamate also mentioned the registration process that these parties must navigate, including gathering 5,000 signatures to confirm their support base and meet the necessary voter threshold to secure representation.

Previous articles have noted similar sentiments from other political figures, such as Apisai Moce from the NextGen Alliance Party, who also advocated for youth leadership, reinforcing the notion that the future of Fijian politics depends on the engagement of younger voters and candidates.

This rallying call for young participation in politics is a hopeful sign for the future of governance in Fiji, suggesting a vibrant and inclusive electoral landscape. As political engagement among younger demographics grows, it potentially leads to more representative governance, addressing the needs of all Fijians effectively.
