The newly unveiled Fijian Drua Foundation aims to enhance the growth and opportunities for young rugby talents in Fiji. This initiative includes the establishment of the Drua Academy, designed to nurture local players who in the past often felt compelled to seek opportunities abroad, sometimes at a young age.
Mark Evans, CEO of Drua and Trustee of the Foundation, highlighted the struggles faced by many young players, including cultural and language barriers, loneliness, and immense pressure to support their families. These issues can hinder performance, leading to challenging outcomes for those who do not succeed.
The Drua Academy will provide a structured development pathway for young athletes aged U16, U17, and U18. Approximately 90 players will receive coaching from Drua’s high-performance staff during their training periods from November to March. In addition to skill training, players will be compensated and provided with gear and season tickets, allowing them to continue representing their school teams.
The Foundation’s plans extend beyond rugby skills; it emphasizes overall health and education. Initiatives include the Anchor Kids Club, which promotes fitness and healthy lifestyles through school outreach programs. In 2024, the Foundation connected with over 800 children, and this engagement is set to grow in 2025 with more visits and resources.
The project also focuses on mental resilience, aiming to build supportive school environments that teach empathy, mindfulness, and the importance of community connections. The Drua Foundation is committed to bringing sports resources to rural and isolated communities, fostering inclusivity and support this way.
Through grassroots events and health education advocacy, the foundation will work to ensure the children of Fiji not only excel in sports but also lead healthy, united lives.
