In a remarkable initiative aimed at supporting breast cancer patients and survivors, the Butterfly Buddies program has assisted over 200 women in just one week. Gillian Horton, a survivor and volunteer with Rotary, emphasized the program’s mission to help women regain a sense of normalcy after surgery through specialized bra-fitting services. This initiative addresses the societal stigmas often faced by these women, aiming to restore their confidence and emotional well-being.

Horton shared the profound impact of the program, stating, “These women who come to us, their lives are changed. They can go back into their community, they can go to church, they look like themselves, and they feel like themselves. And when the lady feels like herself, all the family is happy.” She highlighted that the benefits extend beyond just the individual participants, positively influencing families and communities across Fiji.

The Butterfly Buddies program operates in partnership with the Fiji Cancer Society and has garnered widespread support from the public. The initiative will continue at Labasa Hospital, inviting both women and children to partake in this free service, further reinforcing the community-oriented focus of the program.

This initiative aligns with the growing network of support services for cancer survivors, such as the recently opened Self Care Retreat (Fiji) Hub in Nabua. This hub serves as an oasis for women survivors, offering a safe space for healing and community engagement. Both programs underscore the importance of emotional support in recovery, fostering environments where individuals can discuss their experiences and unlock a path toward healing.

As these initiatives unfold, they illuminate the resilience of communities coming together to uplift one another, emphasizing hope and the strength found in connection during difficult times.
