Pritika Vandana Nandani, a dedicated single mother from Koroipita, Lautoka, shares her journey of raising her 16-year-old daughter, Krishal Kavita, who has cerebral palsy. Despite the difficulties associated with being a single parent to a child with special needs for the past decade, Nandani speaks positively about the strength and lessons that come from these challenges.
Ms. Nandani emphasizes the importance of love and encouragement for other single mothers in similar situations. “These disabled kids motivate us; they teach us how to live our life,” she expressed. “Please, don’t dishearten them. Make them strong, love them, so they can be happy like my daughter.”
Currently relying on social welfare, including a disabled allowance, she looks forward to opportunities created by income-generating projects provided by the Ministry for Women, Children and Social Protection. These initiatives include a sewing and tailoring project that supplies starter packs and equipment to help individuals launch their businesses, allowing them to transition away from welfare dependency.
“It’s a significant help for those of us with limited sources of income,” Ms. Nandani stated regarding the sewing machine and its potential to improve her financial situation. The community of Koroipita plays a vital role in supporting its members, providing assistance and facilitating local entrepreneurship, making daily necessities more accessible to residents.
By encouraging community support and promoting local entrepreneurship, stories like Nandani’s highlight the resilience found among single mothers. They not only endure personal challenges but foster a spirit of hope, proving that collective efforts can lead to improved circumstances and empowerment in the face of adversity.
As we celebrate their journeys, it’s a reminder that with love, support, and community, individuals can overcome significant challenges and thrive in their endeavors.
