Empowering Pacific Youth: New Literacy Resources Unveiled

On Friday, September 6, the Pacific Community unveiled two new literacy resources in celebration of International Literacy Day.

One of the resources is a regional poetry booklet aimed at enhancing literacy through poetry, designed for use by educators and parents across various educational levels. This booklet is titled “Voices of the Pacific Youth: A Literacy Learning Tool.”

Ruci Qele, the Educational Assessment Specialist – Literacy at the Pacific Community, noted that while the booklet was developed from the findings of the Pacific Islands Literacy and Numeracy Assessment 2021 cycle, which focuses on Year 4 and Year 6 students, it can be beneficial for teachers, educators, and parents to foster literacy foundations among Pacific students, regardless of their current grade.

Additionally, the Pacific Community launched the Pacific’s Education Research Bank, a digital platform located on the Pacific Data Hub that offers access to regional educational research and aims to tackle information management challenges.

The event also commemorated the 20th anniversary of the South Pacific Form Seven Certificate, a regional qualification for Year 13 students.

The theme for this year’s literacy day was “Enhancing literacy through multilingualism: Promoting peace across the Blue Pacific Continent.”

The Pacific Community intends to distribute these new resources to Education Ministries across its 15 member countries.
