Empowering Landowners: A New Era of Economic Participation in Fiji’s Tourism

Landowners are encouraged to take an active role in the management of their land, according to Ro Filipe Tuisawau, Minister for Public Works, Meteorology and Transport. During a recent MOU signing involving the Fiji National Provident Fund, the Asian Development Bank, and the Nakovacake Development Trust for a major tourism development project at Nasaulevu in Nadi, Tuisawau emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that landowners engage as active economic participants rather than remaining passive.

Tuisawau described the event as significant for community involvement and engagement, noting that the government is prepared to support landowners in their economic contributions. He applauded the trust for its efforts and stressed the importance of good governance and transparency.

During the ceremony, Commander-Joint Task Force Brigadier-General Manoa Gadai, chairman of the Nakovacake Development Trust, highlighted the collaboration between FNPF and ADB as a groundbreaking milestone for local communities and Fiji as a whole. He stated that this partnership offers substantial development opportunities for the nation.

Brig-Gen Gadai articulated that the MOU transcends a simple business agreement; it represents the initiation of a transformative journey for the Nakovacake community. He noted that the development of Nasaulevu, located across from the Port Denarau Marina, is set to enhance the tourism sector while providing benefits to local communities. He remarked that this venture symbolizes a return to their ancestral land, Nasaulevu, a site of deep cultural significance.
