The Asco Foundation, in collaboration with Datec (Fiji) Pte Ltd, has launched a campaign aimed at enhancing children’s safety online, kicking off with a visit to Deenbandhoo Memorial School in Suva last month. The program, titled “Think Before You Click,” is designed to raise cybersecurity awareness among primary school students, focusing on the importance of online safety and responsible behavior in the digital world.
Assistant headteacher William Raione emphasized the relevance of the initiative, particularly due to the growing access children have to the internet. He noted that many children need the knowledge and skills to navigate online spaces safely, adding that the workshop is crucial for teaching them how to secure their accounts and behave appropriately online.
Raione also brought attention to the alarming issue of cyberbullying, highlighting its potential impact, especially when children do not confide in adults about their experiences. He praised the initiative for its potential in helping to combat such challenges.
The program targets students in grades 6, 7, and 8, recognizing that this age group is at a prime stage to learn about cybersecurity. It aims to educate the students and encourage them to pass this knowledge on to their families and peers, thus fostering awareness within the wider community.
Ronald Kumar, the chief executive officer of Asco Motors and the driving force behind the project, stressed the initiative’s long-term vision. He expressed hope that students would share the knowledge gained at home, thereby broadening awareness of online safety just as cyber threats can spread. He mentioned that instilling these values at an early age will help young individuals safely navigate the digital landscape.
The Asco Foundation has allocated $20,000 to this initiative, which aims to reach ten schools this year, with plans for further growth. The visit to Deenbandhoo Memorial School marked the beginning of this valuable endeavor, with future visits planned for schools in Suva and Nausori.
At Deenbandhoo, the positive effects of the program were already evident. Raione noted that the students gained valuable insights, which they would share with their families. He expressed confidence that these efforts would help mitigate cyber risks in their communities.
This campaign highlights the Asco Foundation’s dedication to community development, particularly in tackling the increasing cybersecurity challenges faced by Fiji’s youth. As the digital environment evolves, such initiatives are essential to ensure that the next generation is adequately prepared to deal with online safety issues.
