The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is working to enhance the skills of school dropouts in Kadavu, focusing on transforming them into competent seafarers. Joeli Cawaki, the CEO of MSAF, highlighted this initiative that aims to equip the youth with essential maritime skills and create career pathways in the maritime industry.
In collaboration with various NGOs and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), MSAF is facilitating training sessions for local communities in Kadavu. According to Mr. Cawaki, there have already been two training sessions, with plans for a total of nine to cover all districts in the area. During one of these sessions, nearly 200 individuals participated, with a primary focus on engaging boat owners and the youth.
Mr. Cawaki emphasized the importance of targeting school dropouts, providing them with an opportunity to secure permanent employment in a maritime-centric nation like Fiji. He noted a shortage of trained seafarers in the country, encouraging young people to pursue careers in this field. He stated, “So my message to the youths of Fiji is please come in, be a seafarer, be a Fiji seafarer.” MSAF is collaborating closely with the Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies to ensure that participants receive the proper education and skills needed for a successful maritime career, ultimately offering certificates of competency to qualified candidates.
This initiative not only aims to uplift the youth of Kadavu but also addresses the growing demand for seafarers in Fiji, thereby enhancing the local economy and creating a brighter future for many individuals.
