iTaukei youths are being encouraged to deepen their understanding of Fijian customs and traditions, a message recently conveyed by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, during an event in Tuatua, Labasa. At the opening of the new Tuatua Multi-purpose Court, Mr. Saukuru expressed his admiration for the youths who presented a traditional sevusevu, stating, “Our traditional knowledge should be enhanced each time you participate.”

The minister highlighted the importance of community involvement in fostering leadership skills and keeping the youth engaged in positive activities, especially to combat issues such as drug abuse. He urged every iTaukei youth to consider their responsibilities towards their vanua, or district, which looks to them for future leadership.

“Village or community elders should teach and impart to youths ways on how to perform iTaukei traditions,” Saukuru said, emphasizing the crucial role of education alongside cultural practice. He believes that by bridging the generational gap through regular discussions between youth and elders, the youths will be better motivated to engage in their cultural heritage.

This emphasis on community-driven initiatives echoes statements made during previous events, such as the Lau Yaubula Youth Festival, where Mr. Saukuru underscored the importance of cultural heritage and self-identity among youth. The festival’s focus on “Mo Kilai iko Mada” (Know who you are) resonated with his current message about fostering a culturally rich upbringing.

The inauguration of the Tuatua multipurpose court is not merely a sporting development; it symbolizes a broader commitment to youth empowerment, creating spaces for personal growth and community bonding. With similar projects rolling out across Fiji, such as other multipurpose courts in Labasa, the government is making strides in providing infrastructure that promotes healthy lifestyles and active participation among the youth.

These efforts represent a hopeful vision for the future, underscoring the importance of cultural education and community engagement in nurturing the next generation of leaders in Fiji.
