Empowering iTaukei Voices: Adi Tulia Nacola’s Film Debut

Adi Tulia Nacola, a dynamic young iTaukei entrepreneur, exemplifies the rise of women in the business sector. Having successfully ventured into various industries, including furniture and boat building, she now embarks on an exciting new project in film production. Nacola has written, produced, and directed her debut short film titled “Bubu Belo,” in collaboration with Fiji-based Bure Productions.

“Bubu Belo” is a 25-minute film performed in the iTaukei language, showcasing the lives of two main characters, Bubu and Tamara, who reside in a quaint wooden cottage by the sea. Set in Verevere Village, which is in Nacola’s home province of Ra, the film portrays Bubu teaching Tamara essential survival skills, including fishing and cultivating his own crops, while imparting lessons on independence and respect for nature.

The plot thickens when an unexpected figure from their past arrives, presenting Bubu with a challenging dilemma. This storyline resonates with the ongoing struggle faced by indigenous communities, as urban migration often clashes with traditional values and the connection to the land.

Nacola emphasizes that while opportunities often appear more abundant in urban settings, there remains significant value in rural areas and maintaining a connection to one’s heritage. As a proponent of storytelling and cultural knowledge, Nacola aims to bridge the gap between generations through her film, fostering a connection between elders and youth, including those who understand their language and those learning it.

The short film underscores the crucial relationship between older generations and children, highlighting storytelling as an essential educational tool to teach respect for one another and the environment.

The premiere of “Bubu Belo” will take place next week at the Film Fiji office in Suva, followed by screenings in various villages across Ra. Sponsored by Film Fiji, these community showings aim to share Bubu and Tamara’s story and reinforce the importance of cultural identity and belonging as communities look toward the future.

Event specifics:
– Premiere of “Bubu Belo” by Adi Tulia Nacola
– Location: Film Fiji (Ground Floor, Civic House, Suva)
– Date: Thursday, January 16, 2025

This achievement reflects not only Nacola’s individual success but also the growing recognition and appreciation for indigenous storytelling and culture. As communities embrace their roots, they are empowered to navigate future challenges with a solid sense of identity.
