In a significant move to empower landowners and promote economic self-sufficiency, the iTaukei Land Trust Board has delivered machinery worth $295,000 to four landowning unit groups across the Ra and Ba provinces. Chairman and Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu emphasized the crucial role of practical investments in tools and resources to enhance economic empowerment for landowners.

Vasu underlined the importance of landowners accessing financial assistance through the Ministry, particularly through the iTaukei Development Fund, which offers loans with no deposit required and a 2% interest rate. This financial support aims to assist registered landowners in the Vola ni Kawa Bula, as currently, iTaukei businesses constitute only 5% of the market, a figure that needs improvement for community empowerment.

The recipient landowning units include Mataqali Nacobicibici Trust from Nasavusavu Settlement in Nalawa, Mataqali Duaira in Tavua District, and Yavusa Leweisavu and Bitowai, Leweiwai of Momi Village in Nadroga. The iTaukei Development Fund aligns with the Trust Board’s vision to transform landowners into active participants in Fiji’s economic development, rather than mere custodians of land.

This initiative not only positions landowners for enhanced productivity and entrepreneurship but also serves to reduce historical inequalities in wealth distribution across various aspects of national life in Fiji. By investing in their capabilities and resources, the iTaukei community can look forward to a more prosperous and equitable future, fostering hope and encouraging greater participation in the economy.

Overall, this strategic investment in local capabilities represents a step towards a more inclusive economic environment, promising not just immediate benefits but also long-term improvements in the welfare of the iTaukei people.
