Empowering iTaukei Entrepreneurs: A New Era of Business Skills and Financial Literacy

The iTaukei Trust Fund Board is advancing efforts to enhance iTaukei involvement in entrepreneurship by implementing a training program that will be available across nine provinces. This initiative aims to provide local communities with the essential skills necessary to establish and maintain successful businesses.

Chief Executive Aisake Taito emphasizes that financial literacy is a significant obstacle for many iTaukei entrepreneurs. Unlike other communities that often benefit from generational wealth, numerous iTaukei individuals commence their business journeys with minimal or no financial support. Taito asserts that the training program is crucial in bridging the historical financial gaps that have impeded iTaukei entrepreneurship.

“Many of us, as iTaukei, start from scratch, which sets us apart. Other groups often grow in business-oriented environments, allowing for clearer financial management between personal and communal expenses,” Taito stated, highlighting the unique economic challenges faced by the iTaukei community. Cultural differences in financial practices have also presented difficulties in establishing thriving businesses among iTaukei innovators.

A collaborative approach through the concept of Solesolevaki encourages communities to unite in supporting entrepreneurial ventures. By focusing on equipping individuals with skills and nurturing community-driven growth, the iTaukei Trust Fund Board is laying the groundwork for more robust economic participation among its members.

Furthermore, this initiative complements previous efforts highlighted by Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, who has acknowledged systemic challenges and emphasized increasing the proportion of iTaukei business owners, currently at just five percent. Various workshops have been organized recently to promote strategic planning and business ownership within the community.

The Trust Fund Board’s program signals a hopeful future where iTaukei communities equip themselves with the tools and knowledge necessary to overcome financial barriers and achieve economic independence. By fostering stronger ties within the community and enhancing financial literacy, these initiatives are poised to create a more empowered and resilient iTaukei entrepreneurial landscape.
