On May 29-30 this year, a significant dialogue took place at the Harbourpoint Convention Centre in Lami, focusing on enhancing the presence of Indigenous Fijians in business. This event was organized by the Fiji Indigenous Business Council (FIBC), led by Ulaisi Taoi.

Over the two days of discussions, various strategies for the development and support of Indigenous businesses were proposed. One key outcome was the establishment of an office for the FIBC.

Taoi highlighted in a recent phone conversation that the new office will greatly assist the 91 businesses currently registered with the council. “With an office, we will facilitate meetings more effectively,” Taoi stated. “Regular discussions will occur during board meetings to further this initiative.”

He elaborated that the office will include a boardroom, training room, secretariat, and eight smaller cubicles for members to work within. These facilities aim to enhance collaboration and operational effectiveness among the council members.

Additionally, Taoi mentioned that the office will host training sessions related to various professional areas, including financial management and accounting, crucial for business success.

The council’s new office will also serve as a venue for company meetings, networking, and collaboration, which Taoi believes is a pivotal time for Indigenous businesses in Fiji. The vision of FIBC is to guide Indigenous entrepreneurs and those exploring business opportunities, emphasizing that clarity in their ventures can lead to remarkable growth.

Services at the new office are set to commence on November 28, with plans to open similar offices in Lautoka, Labasa, and Rakiraki.

This initiative marks a promising step towards empowering Indigenous Fijians in the business sector, fostering a sense of community and shared success, and setting the stage for future economic growth within the region. It reflects a positive commitment to support and uplift local entrepreneurs, paving the way for a more vibrant and inclusive business environment.
