Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka has reaffirmed the government’s dedication to ensuring that iTaukei landowners and entrepreneurs are integrated as equal partners in Fiji’s developmental landscape. Speaking at the opening of the Fiji Indigenous Business Council Symposium at the Novotel Hotel in Lami, Gavoka pointed out the historical marginalization of indigenous Fijians who are the custodians of rich cultural heritage and land.

He acknowledged the significant contribution of tourism to Fiji’s economy, which represents about 40% of the nation’s GDP, yet emphasized that the majority of benefits had not reached the indigenous communities adequately. Highlighting the need for a shift, he stated that it is time for landowners to take an active role in capitalizing on tourism opportunities. Gavoka noted that in April 2024, visitor arrivals reached 80,363, marking a 4% increase from the previous year, illustrating the sector’s growth potential.

The DPM called for a more inclusive tourism strategy that encompasses all 14 provinces of Fiji, advocating for indigenous tourism as a burgeoning $67 billion market worldwide. The symposium continues with workshops focused on sustainable tourism, innovative financing models, and entrepreneurial opportunities for iTaukei businesses.

This initiative aligns with the broader efforts observed at the recent Fiji Tourism Convention 2024, where the government reiterated its commitment to empowering indigenous communities through sustainable economic practices. Discussions around public-private partnerships and legislative support echo similar sentiments expressed by Gavoka at global tourism forums, emphasizing the urgency and necessity of including indigenous voices in tourism development.

Gavoka’s vision portrays a hopeful future where indigenous participation not only enriches the tourism experience but also uplifts local economies, ensuring that sustainability and equitable growth are at the forefront of Fiji’s tourism strategy.
