The Viti Indigenous Tourism Alliance (VITA) recently held its inaugural annual general meeting in Suva, bringing together current and potential members who share a common goal of empowering Indigenous Fijian communities through tourism. This significant gathering marks a new chapter in promoting Indigenous tourism in Fiji.
VITA’s research and development officer, Dr. Apisalome Movono, emphasized that the initiative stemmed from extensive research and collaborative efforts. The research highlighted the pressing need for coordination and dialogue to effectively align tourism development with the aspirations of Indigenous people, while also focusing on cultural preservation and sustainable practices.
Founding president Sitiveni Leseitoga Nawaqa noted that this meeting is more than just an event; it symbolizes the celebration of a grassroots movement that has been in development for over a decade. VITA is built on a foundation of research, collaboration, and a shared vision among engaged individuals and communities.
The organization is committed to four core principles:
1. Cultural Empowerment: honoring and celebrating the rich heritage of Indigenous peoples.
2. Sustainability: ensuring that both natural and cultural resources are preserved for future generations.
3. Community Leadership: enabling local groups to take the lead and receive equitable benefits.
4. Knowledge Sharing: fostering innovation and collaboration among various stakeholders.
VITA’s efforts signal a hopeful future for Indigenous communities in Fiji, showcasing how tourism can be a medium for empowerment and sustainable development.
This initiative stands as an inspiring example of how collective action can lead to meaningful changes in tourism, benefiting not only Indigenous communities but also contributing to the cultural richness and biodiversity of Fiji.
