The Viti Indigenous Tourism Alliance (VITA) has reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing indigenous tourism involvement and engagement across Fiji.

This was highlighted during a presentation at the Indigenous Resource Owners’ Forum in Lami, which saw the attendance of resource owners from Fiji’s 14 iTaukei provinces.

In a subsequent statement, VITA vice president Josefa Bau emphasized the NGO’s goal of becoming a regional leader in resilient and sustainable indigenous tourism development.

“Our efforts with local communities, entrepreneurs, and social groups aim to create regenerative tourism experiences that safeguard cultural heritage and natural resources,” said Bau.

“Our mission at VITA involves collaborating closely with indigenous resource owners to help them identify their unique strengths and challenges. We provide the necessary advice, resources, networks, and support to develop sustainable and resilient tourism projects that benefit their communities. Our community-driven approach ensures that indigenous communities are in control of their tourism futures.”

Bau added that VITA has established partnerships with various local and international entities, including the Ministry of Taukei Affairs, Tourism Fiji, Fijian Holdings Ltd, Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association, the National Trust of Fiji, South Pacific Tourism Organisation, and Regenerative Vanua.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges such as cyclones and floods, VITA members have shown remarkable resilience. These experiences of adaptation and strength through indigenous partnerships are essential for creating an alliance of all indigenous Fijians connected to the tourism industry.”

To meet its 2024-2030 targets, VITA has developed an inaugural Action Plan to guide its implementation efforts.
