Empowering Healthcare Education: FNU and UON Partnership

Fiji National University (FNU), through its College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (CMNHS), has signed an agreement with Australia’s University of Newcastle (UON).

FNU vice-chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba stated that FNU is committed to driving innovation and progress in Fiji and the wider Pacific region, serving as the leading provider of healthcare, medical, and nursing education. She added that the partnership with UON aligns perfectly with this vision.

“Since the 1880s, CMNHS has a long and distinguished history of producing top-tier medical professionals for Fiji, the Pacific, and beyond,” said Prof Nabobo-Baba. “This MOU establishes a framework for fostering cooperation in several key areas, including a vibrant exchange of faculty and students, enabling them to participate in programs of study, research projects, and research training at each other’s institutions.”

Prof Alex Zelinsky, vice-chancellor and president of UON, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership with FNU.

“We believe that partnership and knowledge are exchanged both ways, and strong partnerships are built through collaborative efforts to achieve better training, research, and innovation, particularly toward sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Prof Zelinsky said. “We see Fiji as a very strong pillar of our university’s Pacific strategy, and we are committed to research and education focused on creating a positive impact across Fiji and the Pacific.”

This is the second agreement between FNU and UON, with the first one being signed in 2019.
