Students looking to study iTaukei-related subjects at the University of Fiji (UniFiji) have a promising opportunity through scholarships offered by the iTaukei Trust Fund Board (iTTFB). Recently, both institutions renewed their collaboration with a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that aims to uplift iTaukei education via the Centre for iTaukei Studies (CIS) at UniFiji.

The MOU ensures that the iTTFB will provide two scholarships each year to students enrolled at the CIS, reinforcing their commitment to enhancing iTaukei education. Additionally, the agreement lays out plans for a restructured curriculum, which will include subjects related to art, performance, culture, and resource management, expanding offerings through various faculties, such as the School of Business and Economics and the Department of Education in the School of Humanities and Arts.

As part of its commitment to growth and development, UniFiji will receive backing from the 2024/2025 National Budget for constructing a new CIS facility, which will include lecture halls, seminar spaces, staff offices, and exhibition galleries. Construction is set to commence next month, facilitating the objectives outlined in the MOU.

The signing event at the UniFiji Samabula campus was attended by prominent figures, including iTTFB CEO Aisake Taito and UniFiji Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem, alongside council members, staff, and students. Professor Shameem noted the enhanced focus on education and curriculum development within the CIS and expressed excitement about the new building site recently approved by the Council.

Mr. Taito underscored the significance of the MOU in preserving and promoting the Fijian language and cultural practices, while also empowering indigenous communities. He highlighted that this partnership would facilitate research, documentation, and the dissemination of indigenous knowledge, contributing to both scholarly literature authored by indigenous researchers and new career pathways for youth committed to serving their communities.

This initiative reflects a sustainable and inclusive vision for education that honors cultural heritage and empowers future generations. By intertwining tradition with modern educational practices, the University of Fiji showcases its leadership in promoting both cultural preservation and academic advancement.
