Reverend Etuate Lasaro delivered an inspiring message to students at Nakorosule District School in Naitasiri, urging them to “go beyond yourself.” This school, established over 60 years ago, has a rich history of educating children in the province and has produced notable alumni, including prominent academic and senator Dr. Asesela Ravuvu.
During the school’s recent annual awards ceremony, the community of Waimaro came together to celebrate the achievements of its youth. Reverend Lasaro and his wife, Dr. Ilisapeci Lasaro—who were the chief guests—are concluding their five-year service in the Waimaro area as Mr. Lasaro transitions to serve as minister in the Methodist Church’s Nadera circuit.
In his address, Reverend Lasaro emphasized that education goes beyond books and exams; it encompasses a holistic experience that nurtures both the mind and spirit. He quoted US First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, stating that education makes individuals whole, not just smarter. He urged parents to acknowledge every child’s efforts, whether they receive awards or not, suggesting simple gestures of appreciation like a special lunch or an outing to express love and support.
Highlighting the vital role of family, Reverend Lasaro reminded parents their children’s welfare should come first. He encouraged quality family time grounded in Christian values and urged parents to guide their children without blaming external factors for any challenges they face, particularly in a society grappling with youth issues such as drug abuse and teenage pregnancy.
Dr. Ilisapeci Lasaro reinforced the message about the importance of education for strength and confidence. She shared an inspiring story about her sibling, who achieved great success despite not winning awards in school, emphasizing that hard work and perseverance are key to attaining goals.
A noteworthy highlight of the event was the recognition of Ratu Isoa Vuniamatana, who made history as the first male recipient of the school’s DUX award. He expressed gratitude to his teachers and family, demonstrating the spirit of encouragement and ambition that the school fosters.
