In a significant move to enhance the learning experiences of students with special needs, the Fiji National University (FNU) conducted a training session for heads of special education schools. This impactful workshop took place at the university’s Namaka campus in Nadi on April 11 and aimed to provide educators with the necessary tools to better support their students.
Asenaca Sukanatabua, the head of Sigatoka Special School, remarked on the workshop’s importance, noting it offered invaluable insights on addressing the unique needs of children with special needs and preparing them for tertiary education. She emphasized the necessity of developing programs that create pathways for these students’ futures.
FNU’s manager of outreach, Ella Bennion, acknowledged the high demands of teaching in special education, stating, “Teaching is more than just a profession; it is a calling.” She highlighted that educators serve as advocates and mentors, fostering an empowering learning environment where every child can thrive.
This workshop follows broader initiatives within Fiji aimed at improving educational outcomes for students with disabilities. The prior workshops have focused on vocational and life skills training, facilitating transitions to mainstream schooling, and building inclusive classroom environments. This effort reflects a commitment to inclusive education, with local businesses showing increasing support for job opportunities for students with disabilities.
The ongoing collaboration among educators, organizations, and community partners paints a hopeful picture for the future, where all students, regardless of their challenges, have the chance to succeed academically and in life. The dedicated efforts of stakeholders indicate a burgeoning recognition of the importance of inclusive education in fostering a diverse and supportive society.
