A financial literacy workshop was held recently for the villages of Navuavua, Navutulevu, and Vatusekiyasawa in Rakiraki. This initiative, backed by the Fiji Development Bank (FDB), the Climate Smart Gardening project from Homes of Hope, and funded by Tearfund New Zealand, was designed to support small and aspiring business owners in these communities.
The session was led by Kaliova Nadumu, the FDB manager for Rakiraki, who covered crucial topics such as starting and managing a business and effective cash flow management. Emphasizing the potential for economic success, Nadumu remarked, “Many of you present today are millionaires without realizing it,” encouraging participants to realize their potential through sound business strategies.
Nadumu pointed out that fostering financial literacy is vital for the growth of small enterprises in Fiji, advocating for good practices such as budgeting, saving, and investing that should begin within the household. He highlighted the role of FDB in providing women with access to small business loans, which have positively impacted living standards across the region.
Moreover, the Homes of Hope project aims to empower young women and girls, enabling them to participate actively and collaborate alongside men in their communities. This focus on ensuring the emergence of financially savvy entrepreneurs aligns with broader efforts across Fiji to improve financial literacy and economic independence among its citizens.
This initiative reflects a hopeful trend towards enhanced economic independence and community development, equipping individuals with the knowledge necessary to build prosperous futures. With such supportive measures in place, there is optimism for a more inclusive and resilient economic landscape in Fiji.
