The government has introduced a skill-based training initiative aimed at providing vulnerable youth with real opportunities for growth and personal development. This program, which held its first graduation for 24 former street dwellers from Lautoka, included the completion of the “Seed of Success” and Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights programs.
Minister for Youth, Jese Saukuru, announced that the next phase of training will take place at the Fiji National University in Namaka, Nadi, starting next week. This initiative is focused on multiple objectives, including skills development, family reunification, and active community engagement. Saukuru emphasized the importance of helping these young individuals identify their talents and skills, stating that recognizing their potential is a vital first step toward building their future.
To further support these youths, the government is working on establishing safe houses, which will provide them with stable environments away from the challenges of street life. “This training initiative will allow them to transition into employment while new groups can enter the safe houses, creating a continuous support system,” Saukuru explained.
The program acknowledges the unique challenges faced by youths, especially those released from prison, who often find it difficult to reintegrate due to past mistakes. Youth Officer Kaminieli Sadrata highlighted the pressing need for intervention, as many of these individuals come from difficult home situations that leave them feeling abandoned and without resources.
This initiative mirrors previous projects aimed at uplifting vulnerable populations in Fiji, such as those led by the Australian Pacific Training Coalition, which focused on enhancing employability through various skill certification programs. By investing in education and skill development, the government is contributing not only to the participants’ futures but also positively impacting their communities.
The ongoing support from local organizations, such as Inspire Pacific and Kauwai Home of the Salvation Army, has proven valuable in aiding youths and their families, as evidenced by their successful rehabilitation models. These collaborative efforts reflect a strong commitment to fostering hope and making a significant, lasting impact on the lives of at-risk youth.
As communities rally together to support these young individuals, this initiative serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the transformative power of education and collective action.
