Beyond the headline

Ten students from the Fiji Technical Vocational Training Centre for Persons with Disability have landed stable jobs through the recently launched Job Discovery Programme. Announced yesterday at the centre in Brown Street, Suva, the initiative is designed to help students transition smoothly into the workforce, fostering their independence.

Nina Tokavou, the lead of the programme, emphasized its role in addressing critical factors such as effective communication and workplace orientation for students with disabilities. These elements are vital for creating an inclusive environment, particularly as these students often encounter unique hurdles in employment.

The programme was inspired by Tokavou’s experience with an exchange initiative at Opportunity Village, a US organization focused on supporting individuals with disabilities. She noted that the timing of this programme is particularly advantageous given the current labor shortages in Fiji, where many youths are seeking job opportunities overseas.

Several local businesses have expressed interest in joining this cause. Notably, MacDonalds Fiji and Ronald McDonald House of Charity are keen on creating inclusive job opportunities, while discussions with Tanoa Plaza and the Grand Pacific Hotel indicate a broad commitment to hiring individuals from diverse backgrounds.

The Job Discovery Programme unfolds in three phases: starting with essential workplace skills training, transitioning to a three-month probationary period, and concluding with full-time employment opportunities. Tokavou assured that ongoing support and regular communication with employers will be integral to monitoring the students’ adaptation and success in their new roles.

This initiative is part of Fiji’s broader efforts to enhance vocational training and industry engagement, aiming to create an equitable job market for all, especially youth with disabilities. It not only brings hope to the ten students who secured jobs but also marks a significant move towards inclusion and the development of a diverse workforce in the nation. With various organizations collaborating for the benefit of individuals with disabilities, there is optimism for future initiatives that will continue to create meaningful opportunities for all.
