The Foundation for the Education of Needy Children (FENC) in Fiji has made significant strides this year, providing support to over 7,000 children, bringing its total beneficiaries since its establishment in 2009 to more than 39,000 children. Executive coordinator Nirmala Nambiar reflected on the foundation’s 15-year journey during a recent interview in Nakasi, emphasizing their commitment to aiding vulnerable children, particularly those from low-income and maritime communities.
Despite notable progress, Nambiar pointed out that financial constraints remain a significant challenge for the organization. “Look at the genuine needs of these children. When they’re into drugs, you hear stories, it’s heartbreaking, and that’s what we are trying to break through,” she shared. The foundation is focused on fostering a supportive environment for children, aspiring for them to emerge as the leaders of tomorrow capable of driving change in their communities.
FENC has previously reported on rising support needs due to increasing hardships faced by many families in Fiji, a situation worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Their pervasive efforts include educational initiatives that help families secure necessary resources for their children’s schooling, ensuring that financial struggles do not deprive them of educational opportunities.
In alignment with previously reported activities, FENC has hosted annual walk-a-thons to raise awareness and funds, engaging community members in support of vulnerable children. These initiatives spotlight the vital role of collective action in enhancing educational outcomes and community welfare.
The foundation’s dedication is a beacon of hope, championing the cause of underprivileged children and inspiring teamwork across different segments of society. By continuing its support and seeking collaborations, FENC Fiji exemplifies how community-driven efforts can pave the way for a brighter future for the youth in Fiji, providing them with the resources needed to succeed.
Overall, this narrative reflects a message of resilience and hope as the foundation endeavors to empower children and foster lasting positive change within the community.
