Reverend Etuate Lasaro inspired students at Nakorosule District School in Naitasiri during the school’s annual awards ceremony, urging them to “go beyond yourself.” This educational institution, the oldest in the province, has been nurturing young minds for over 60 years and boasts notable alumni, such as Dr. Asesela Ravuvu, a respected academic and senator.
Mr. Lasaro, alongside his wife, Dr. Ilisapeci, served as the chief guests at the event, which highlighted the collective achievements of local students. As the couple prepares to transition to new roles within the Methodist Church, Mr. Lasaro emphasized that education should encompass more than just academic performance; it should encompass the entire development of a child.
He cited the motto “e namaki mo vua,” reminding parents of their essential role in their children’s education and emotional development. He encouraged them to celebrate their children’s efforts, regardless of whether they received awards, and to prioritize family time, emphasizing the vital role of Christian teachings within the home.
Mr. Lasaro also addressed challenges facing youth today, including issues related to drugs and teenage pregnancy in the area. He stressed that parents are ultimately responsible for their children’s upbringing and that strong family leadership is key to fostering positive behaviors.
Dr. Ilisapeci reinforced the importance of a focused educational journey, encouraging students to set high aspirations. She shared an inspiring story about her sibling, who achieved success without receiving awards in school, emphasizing that perseverance and hard work are critical to overcoming obstacles.
During the ceremony, Ratu Isoa Vuniamatana made history as Nakorosule District’s first male DUX award winner, dedicating his achievement to the support of his teachers and family. He expressed excitement about advancing to secondary school, hoping to attend the prestigious Queen Victoria School.
This event not only celebrated the achievements of students but also fostered a sense of community and hope for the future of education in Naitasiri. The encouragement from community leaders like Mr. and Dr. Lasaro reminds us all that with support and dedication, every child has the potential to achieve greatness.
By nurturing a supportive and encouraging environment, we can look forward to a generation of empowered young individuals ready to make a positive impact on their community and beyond.
