The Ministry of Education has recently conducted its first consultation focused on the pilot programs for Citizenship and Financial Literacy Education. During this significant event, a diverse group of stakeholders participated, including representatives from the Reserve Bank of Fiji, Westpac, the Fiji National Provident Fund, the Fiji Development Bank, and various educational and community organizations.

The pilot initiatives aim to integrate Citizenship Education for students in Years 1 to 4, as well as Years 9 and 10. Additionally, Financial Literacy Education will begin with students in Years 1 and 2, featuring practical assessments where students will learn how to open bank accounts.

The Ministry expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for their valuable contributions and emphasized their commitment to advancing practical, skill-based learning that equips students with essential life skills. There is optimism that these educational initiatives will foster a more informed and financially literate future generation capable of making sound financial decisions.

Previously, Westpac embarked on an innovative approach to financial literacy by launching online training sessions, which was noted to be the first of its kind in Fiji. This program has seen participation from nearly 6,000 Fijians since its start in October 2023, showcasing a strong community interest in enhancing financial skills.

In conclusion, the Ministry of Education’s pilot programs, alongside Westpac’s efforts in financial literacy, highlight a collective movement towards empowering Fijians with knowledge and skills that promote citizenship and responsible financial management. As these initiatives unfold, there is a hopeful outlook on their potential to contribute positively to the educational landscape and the overall well-being of the community.
