In a significant boost to local fisheries, Mr. Ashok Kumar, a fisherman from Korovou, has been awarded a new boat and engine as part of the government’s Seafaring Entrepreneurial Assistance (SEA) Programme. This initiative, aimed at supporting small-scale fishers, was officially inaugurated by Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi R. Ditoka, on March 1, 2025, in Nabilo, Korovou, Tailevu.
The project, which received funding exceeding $22,000, is anticipated to create improved livelihood opportunities for Mr. Kumar and his family. Minister Ditoka highlighted the initiative’s alignment with the Ministry’s Strategic Priority Areas (SPAs), focused on enhancing economic resilience and access to essential services for rural and maritime communities.
This program echoes similar initiatives recently undertaken in other regions, such as the distribution of boats and essential fishing gear to communities in Kadavu and Lau. These programs emphasize the government’s commitment to uplifting rural and maritime livelihoods, where fishing constitutes a primary source of income. In Kadavu and Lau, the SEA Programme has significantly enhanced transportation and fishing capabilities, allowing easier access to education and essential services.
Minister Ditoka stressed the importance of such support in fostering self-sufficiency and promoting economic sustainability, particularly in remote areas. He reinforced the notion that these initiatives not only enhance individual livelihoods but also contribute to the overall resilience of local communities.
The introduction of these resources is projected to bring a hopeful change, empowering families and helping them secure better economic futures. Continued investment in these fishing initiatives embodies a promising approach to develop greater economic independence and sustainability within Fiji’s rural communities. As support for projects like the SEA Programme grows, the future appears optimistic for fishermen and their families reliant on these vital resources.
