The Asco Foundation, in collaboration with Datec (Fiji) Pte Ltd, has launched a campaign focused on ensuring the online safety of children, commencing with its first school visit to Deenbandhoo Memorial School in Suva last month. The initiative, titled “Think Before You Click,” aims to enhance cybersecurity awareness among primary school students, highlighting the significance of responsible digital behavior and online safety.

Assistant headteacher William Raione stressed the importance of this program, especially with the increasing access that children have to the internet. He pointed out that many children need to acquire cyber knowledge and skills to stay safe online. Raione noted that the workshop is valuable in teaching students how to secure their online accounts and how to act responsibly.

He also addressed the serious issue of cyberbullying and its potential catastrophic effects, particularly when children refrain from discussing their experiences with adults. Raione expressed hope that this initiative could significantly mitigate such concerns.

The program is specifically designed for students in grades 6, 7, and 8, as they are at an appropriate age to understand cybersecurity importance. It encourages participants to share their newly acquired knowledge with their families and peers, thus creating a broader awareness within the community.

Ronald Kumar, CEO of Asco Motors and a key figure behind the project, underscored its long-term vision. He mentioned that the goal is for students to disseminate the information they learn, which would lead to increased cybersecurity awareness across Fiji. Kumar emphasized the need to instill these values early in students to help them navigate the digital environment safely.

The Asco Foundation has invested $20,000 in this initiative, aiming to reach ten schools this year, with plans for further growth. The kickoff at Deenbandhoo Memorial School sets the stage for upcoming visits to more schools in Suva and Nausori over the next few months.

Feedback from Deenbandhoo students indicates a positive reception to the program. Raione remarked, “The students have learned a lot from this program, and it’s information they’ll take back to their families. I’m confident this will help prevent cyber risks in our communities.”

This campaign demonstrates the Asco Foundation’s dedication to community development and its proactive approach to addressing the pressing issue of cybersecurity among Fiji’s younger population. As the digital world continues to evolve, such initiatives are essential for preparing the next generation to confront online safety challenges.
