At the launch of the FDB 2024 National Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Awards in Suva, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica reinforced the importance of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in driving economic prosperity for Fiji. He highlighted the government’s commitment to empowering this vital sector through a recent $190 million loan guarantee to the Fiji Development Bank (FDB).

Kamikamica expressed confidence that with adequate support, MSMEs foster vibrant communities and contribute significantly to national growth. He emphasized that while funding is essential, entrepreneurs must also gain the necessary knowledge and tools to sustain and compete in an increasingly digital marketplace. This collaboration aligns with the government’s strategic vision for developing a robust digital economy and ensuring that local businesses can adapt successfully to market changes.

The Deputy Prime Minister also mentioned ongoing initiatives such as the Integrated Human Resources Development Programme and Northern Development Programme, which provide crucial support to business owners, particularly in overcoming funding challenges.

Furthermore, he celebrated the role of the National SME Awards as a platform to recognize and inspire the achievements of entrepreneurs across various categories, reinforcing the government’s pledge to bolster the SME landscape. Emphasizing collective responsibility, Kamikamica noted that a united effort involving government, private sector, and individuals is key to building a thriving future for MSMEs.

This commitment is part of a broader initiative to create an inclusive and sustainable business environment that promotes innovation and accommodates the aspirations of budding entrepreneurs, leading to a more resilient economic future for Fiji.

The positive outlook for the SME sector is buoyed by the acknowledgment from industry leaders and the government, promising growth, sustainability, and community development as the nation looks to support its entrepreneurial spirit and drive.
