The Fiji Trade Unions Congress (FTUC) is advocating for enhanced pre-departure training for Fijian workers planning to work overseas, emphasizing the importance of adequately preparing individuals for the conditions they will face abroad. General Secretary Felix Anthony highlighted that historically, many workers have arrived at their destinations without understanding their rights and responsibilities, leading to significant challenges.

In a collaborative effort, the FTUC is working closely with the Ministry of Employment to ensure workers receive comprehensive training that better equips them before they leave the country. Anthony expressed concerns over worker preparedness, stating, “We believe currently, as our people go abroad, many of them are ill-prepared and find themselves in a difficult situation when they actually get there to work.”

Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh confirmed that pre-departure training is an existing part of the process and mentioned plans to extend the training duration. The Ministry intends to strengthen the program by including additional sessions where the FTUC can assist workers in understanding their contracts and legal protections under employment laws in their destination countries.

This focus on training aligns with recent initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of Fijian workers under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme. Earlier discussions noted a broader call for increased participation from local communities in the preparation process, as many workers hail from rural areas. The Fijian government has recognized the need for collaboration among families, communities, and government to enhance the support offered to workers.

The proactive measures being put in place represent a positive step towards ensuring Fijian workers are well-informed, supported, and treated with dignity while they embark on overseas employment opportunities. With continued efforts from both the FTUC and the Ministry of Employment, the future looks hopeful for enhancing worker rights and protections in international labor contexts.

This joint commitment not only helps secure better outcomes for workers in foreign workplaces but also promotes the importance of mutual support and understanding between families and communities as workers transition to international employment.
