The Fijian Elections Office and the Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations (MEPWR) have forged a new partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) designed to enhance voter registration, boost civic awareness, and promote electoral participation among Fijians living abroad. This initiative aims to ensure that every eligible Fijian, regardless of their location, has the right and opportunity to register and participate in elections, especially with the 2026 General Elections on the horizon.

Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections, highlighted the importance of this MoU as a landmark commitment toward strengthening Fijian democracy. For years, many Fijians working overseas have faced obstacles in the voting process, and this agreement is set to eliminate those barriers. Mataiciwa reassured overseas citizens that the FEO would collaborate with various government agencies to expand access to electoral services.

Maritino Nemani, Permanent Secretary for MEPWR, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the ministry’s dedication to ensuring that Fijians abroad can actively contribute to shaping their country’s future. His remarks focused on the significance of citizens exercising their constitutional right to vote, no matter where they are, and how this collaboration is critical for keeping overseas workers engaged in the electoral process.

This MoU establishes a structured framework for cooperation between the FEO and MEPWR, aiming to facilitate the registration of Fijian workers under international agreements like the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme and the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) Work Scheme. Key initiatives will include setting up voter registration booths, updating data for overseas voter registration, and incorporating voter education into pre-departure briefings.

This strategic partnership marks a positive step forward for Fijians abroad, promising greater inclusivity and ensuring their voices are heard in the democratic process. It reflects a growing recognition of the vital contributions made by Fijians working overseas to the nation’s economy and communities, fostering a sense of connection and responsibility towards their homeland.

Overall, the collaboration between the Fijian Elections Office and the Ministry demonstrates a commitment to an inclusive democracy, paving the way for higher engagement and participation in future electoral processes.
