On the 29th and 30th of May this year, a significant meeting was held at the Harbourpoint Convention Centre in Lami, focusing on enhancing opportunities for the iTaukei community within the global business landscape. This event was spearheaded by the Fiji Indigenous Business Council (FIBC), led by Chair Ulaisi Taoi. Following the two-day conference, various initiatives were discussed and plans were made to establish a dedicated office for the FIBC.

Taoi highlighted the importance of the progress made since the last month’s discussions, stating that the new office would greatly benefit the 91 businesses currently registered with the FIBC. “With the establishment of this office, we can foster better communication,” Taoi explained, emphasizing that meetings would be scheduled regularly on a weekly basis to encourage ongoing dialogue.

Taoi elaborated on the office’s plans, which include a board room, training room for education and mentorship, secretarial space, and eight smaller workspaces (cubicles) designed to facilitate collaboration among FIBC members. The office aims to promote the growth and strategic positioning of diverse companies.

She added that the initiative would provide invaluable training on important matters such as pension, roles and responsibilities, and accounting practices, primarily in English. This office could also serve as a venue for corporate meetings and networking events, representing a significant moment for business in the iTaukei sector.

Furthermore, an crucial objective of the FIBC is to provide essential support for iTaukei individuals, particularly those pursuing business ventures. It aims to support those who are already in business but may require clearer guidance to achieve greater success.

The establishment of the office is set to commence in November, with plans to open additional offices in Lautoka, Labasa, and Rakiraki.

This initiative represents a hopeful development for the iTaukei community, creating platforms for business growth, education, and networking to thrive. It’s a promising step toward strengthening the economic foundation of the iTaukei people and fostering their entrepreneurial spirit.
