Sashi Kiran has been appointed as the new Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, outlining her main goals centered on women’s empowerment, child protection, support for vulnerable groups, and the fight against gender-based violence (GBV). She expressed gratitude towards her predecessor, Lynda Tabuya, recognizing her significant contributions and the solid foundation she established for the ministry’s objectives.

In her inaugural statement, Ms. Kiran emphasized her dedication to addressing ongoing societal challenges, asserting that the ministry’s role extends beyond policy administration to advocating for change and ensuring inclusivity for all Fijians. Furthermore, she reaffirmed the commitment to advancing women’s rights even amidst past leadership challenges, noting that women play a crucial role in families and communities.

Ms. Kiran articulated her focus on combating child abuse, stating the importance of children as invaluable assets to society. She committed to prioritizing their protection, education, and overall well-being, and aims to create environments where every child can flourish.

Additionally, she highlighted her ministry’s responsibility to advocate for marginalized groups, including the elderly and individuals with disabilities, pledging to improve social protection programs to better serve these populations.

This new leadership marks a hopeful progression towards addressing critical societal issues, reinforcing the importance of empowering women and safeguarding children while uplifting those in need. The initiatives proposed by Ms. Kiran have the potential to foster a more equitable and just society in Fiji.
