The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs is urging indigenous resource owners in Fiji to take advantage of diverse opportunities available within iTaukei institutions that focus on resource development and income generation. Minister Ifereimi Vasu shared this message during a community session following the opening of the Cagivou Supermarket in Kinoya, Suva.

Vasu underscored the ministry’s dedication to equipping indigenous communities with essential training programs, financial literacy initiatives, and necessary support systems aimed at helping them establish and grow their businesses. He stated, “These initiatives are designed to assist iTaukei resource owners in contributing to the national economy,” highlighting the importance of leveraging community resources for economic development.

The launch of the Cagivou Investment initiative and the new supermarket represents a critical step towards economically empowering traditional landowning communities. This supermarket not only seeks to provide essential goods but also to promote local entrepreneurship by sourcing products from local producers and creating job opportunities for the community.

In addition, Vasu pointed out the iTaukei Trust Fund Board’s Wealth Fund, which is designed to assist landowners in maximizing the utilization of their land. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the ministry to inspire and empower the local iTaukei population, especially in light of the fact that only five percent of businesses in Fiji are owned by native Fijians. Vasu aims to transform this statistic through collaborative efforts, encouraging a cultural shift towards support and celebration of local successes.

The Minister’s emphasis on unity and encouragement among Fijians illustrates ongoing initiatives for economic inclusivity, with the goal of uplifting the iTaukei community. By embracing available opportunities and fostering community spirit, there exists great potential for enhanced entrepreneurial efforts, paving the way for a more robust and diverse economic future for everyone in the region.
