Fifteen beef farmers in western Viti Levu have received essential fencing materials from the Ministry of Agriculture, significantly enhancing their livestock operations. The support package comprises fence posts, timber, and land preparation services to help increase productivity.

One of the beneficiaries, farmer Aisea Nabalarua from Dravuwalu, Kadavu, who leases 500 acres of land in Nadi, expressed that this initiative bolsters his family’s sustenance through pastoral farming. The fencing materials have enabled him and other farmers to secure their livestock, allowing them to successfully fence off 300 acres thus far.

Nabalarua highlighted the abundance of idle land in the area and urged young people and landowners to pursue agricultural endeavors, saying, “It can be a valuable source of income and provide healthy nourishment for your families.” He also stressed the importance of utilizing government assistance to further enhance their agricultural efforts.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy to strengthen food security and empower local farmers through tangible investments. Similar support was recently provided to various farming cooperatives across Fiji, as noted in other initiatives aimed at improving livestock security and agricultural practices. For instance, the government has previously emphasized the importance of fencing and feed, integral components to the success of beef farming in the region.

Overall, this ongoing support from the Ministry of Agriculture highlights a hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s agricultural sector, showcasing a commitment to sustainable farming practices and encouraging local communities to engage in productive agricultural activities. By equipping farmers with the necessary resources, these actions aim to enhance food security and improve livelihoods across rural areas. Such proactive initiatives are paving the way for a brighter future in Fiji’s farming landscape.
