The Nukuloa Dairy Farmers Group in Lutu, Wainibuka has received a significant enhancement to their operations with the recent handover of a new boat and engine. This initiative aims to facilitate the transportation of milk to the nearest collection point, providing essential support for local dairy farmers.
Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Vatimi Rayalu, presented the equipment and underscored the government’s dedication to empowering rural farmers with practical tools to boost productivity and improve market accessibility. “This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to empowering the agricultural community,” stated Rayalu, emphasizing the aim of reducing transport burdens faced by small-scale farmers.
During the handover ceremony, veteran dairy farmer Mitieli Tikoduadua expressed his gratitude, sharing his reflections on the difficulties that previous generations endured while transporting milk using bamboo rafts. He highlighted that this new support will allow farmers to concentrate more on farming activities rather than transportation challenges.
The introduction of the boat and engine is expected to not only aid dairy farmers but also provide a vital resource for the local community, particularly benefiting students who struggle to access schools during heavy rain and flooding. Rayalu articulated that these measures align with the broader vision for sustainable agricultural development and enhancing community resilience. He reiterated that dairy farming is pivotal to food security and the local economy.
Farmers at the event echoed Tikoduadua’s sentiments, acknowledging that this focused support could profoundly enhance their livelihoods and motivate the next generation to engage in farming with a renewed sense of purpose.
This initiative reflects a consistent governmental strategy aimed at uplifting agricultural communities across Fiji, with similar support already witnessed in various regions, such as Tubenasolo and Namosi, where essential farming tools have been provided to further cultivate local agricultural practices. The collective assistance demonstrates a hopeful future where farmers are equipped to overcome challenges, enhance productivity, and promote a self-sustaining agricultural sector.
