Women from the villages of Nasoki, Vadra, Keteira, and Cakova in Moala are embracing new opportunities through a significant financial literacy and entrepreneurship initiative. This program, spearheaded by the Women’s, Children, and Social Protection Ministry, has received valuable support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The primary objective of the initiative is to provide women with essential skills in bookkeeping, marketing, branding, inventory management, and savings techniques. Participants engage in financial literacy training that fosters group discussions, enabling them to collaborate and exchange insights from one another’s experiences.
Akemi Nagahara, a JICA volunteer, highlighted the critical nature of this program, emphasizing that financial literacy and effective business management are vital for establishing sustainable livelihoods. The initiative aims to empower women, allowing them to take charge of their financial futures, which, in turn, enhances their quality of life and that of their families.
Jiajiana Vulaono, a participant from Cakova, shared her transformation, stating that prior to the training, she faced challenges in starting a small business. “Now, I feel confident in keeping records and planning ahead. This knowledge will change how I support my family,” she remarked.
The program also introduced participants to crucial social welfare services, including various support programs and information regarding available assistance.
Additionally, the initiative has included awareness sessions conducted by organizations such as the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, Fiji Police, and the Department of Children under the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection.
This program is a significant part of the government’s continuous efforts to advance gender equality, empower women within the community, and fight against poverty. With their newfound skills, participants are poised to create a brighter, more self-sufficient future for themselves and their families.
