Empowering Dreams: Grants Await Fiji’s Aspiring Entrepreneurs!

Nineteen businesses and aspiring micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are eagerly anticipating business grants to elevate their ventures, following their completion of the ‘Start and Improve Your Business’ (SIYB) training conducted at the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, MSMEs, and Communication office in Suva last week.

The three-day workshop, facilitated by certified MSME trainer Mohammed Aslam Khan, provided participants with essential skills to launch and manage their businesses. Khan stated that the trainees would soon receive grants after submitting their quotations for necessary startup items. “Once they have their items and vendor licenses, we will monitor their progress to ensure they are on the right track,” Khan remarked, emphasizing the ministry’s commitment to providing ongoing support and training as needed.

Feedback regarding the SIYB training has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants expressing their appreciation for the knowledge gained. Veronica Isaac, one of the trainees, described the program as transformative: “It has opened my eyes about owning a business and running a business. I’ve learned how to break that down and come to a profit and a loss in sales.”

Moreover, Khan encouraged more individuals to take advantage of the opportunities available through the ministry, urging those interested in entrepreneurship to register with the ministry’s offices across the country. This training initiative is part of a broader effort by the government to empower MSMEs as crucial players in the economy, particularly considering their role in job creation and poverty reduction.

This initiative aligns with recent government announcements regarding $3.6 million in grants available for MSMEs, highlighting the government’s dedication to nurturing local entrepreneurs and driving sustainable economic growth. With approximately 82% of businesses in Fiji classified as MSMEs, the successful implementation of such training programs and financial support can help elevate local economies and create a more resilient business environment.

The future looks promising for these aspiring business owners as they embark on their entrepreneurial journeys, equipped with the necessary skills and financial support to thrive in Fiji’s dynamic marketplace.
