The Amania Women’s Group from Nailega, Wainibuka, Tailevu, is experiencing significant success as they transition from selling crafts and fresh produce by the roadside to showcasing their handmade goods at the Suva Civic Centre’s Christmas Market. This event, which lasts for two days, features around 40 women entrepreneurs, highlighting the spirit of collaboration and support among local businesses.
Yesterday, the group set out at 4 a.m., braving the chilly morning to bring their products to Suva. Their dedication paid off, as they reported a successful day, selling various items such as mats and shopping chains, and even receiving several bespoke orders.
Eleni Kaloulia, the group’s treasurer, reflected on the journey towards financial independence, noting that early challenges seemed insurmountable due to limited resources and ideas. However, participation in the ROC Market, renowned as Fiji’s longest-running street market for small businesses, has provided a valuable platform for these women to thrive.
Despite the difficulties faced in establishing a foothold in the business landscape, the Amania Women’s Group remains committed to improving the living standards in their village. This resolve showcases the strength and resilience of rural entrepreneurs and serves as a testament to the collective effort in fostering economic independence.
The story of the Amania Women’s Group is not just one of entrepreneurial triumph; it is an inspiring example of how community and determination can transform challenges into opportunities.
In essence, this initiative not only benefits the women involved but also has a ripple effect, uplifting their entire community. As the holiday spirit envelops Suva, the impact of these women’s efforts extends beyond sales, representing hope and progress for rural development.
